A Belchertown man has been arraigned on charges of murder and assault and battery following the fatal shooting of his wife inside their home on Daniel Shays Highway.
According to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, Mark Opper, 56, appeared Monday morning in Eastern Hampshire District Court in connection with the death of his wife, Diane Opper, also 56. The incident is alleged to have taken place shortly after 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 27, 2026, at the couple’s residence.
Prosecutors state that Diane Opper was fatally shot inside the home. Emergency responders were called to the scene, but she was pronounced dead. Authorities have not released further details regarding the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
During the arraignment, Mark Opper was formally charged with murder as well as assault and battery on a family or household member. Judge Bruce Melikian ordered that the defendant be held without bail. The case has been continued to April 27, 2026, for further proceedings.
Northwestern Assistant District Attorney Erin Aiello, who leads the office’s Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Unit, represented the Commonwealth during the hearing. Attorney Jonah Goldsmith, from the Committee for Public Counsel Services, has been appointed to represent the defendant.
The case remains under investigation, and officials have not indicated whether additional charges may be filed. Authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward as they continue to examine the events surrounding the incident.
This case has drawn attention within the Belchertown community, as residents await further details about the circumstances of the tragedy. More information is expected to emerge as the legal process continues and the case returns to court later in April.
