Dave Tyrrell Southway Burgess Hill, UK Death, Obituary: In Loving Memory of Dave Tyrrell: Gone Too Soon, Never Forgotten

Dave Tyrrell Southway Burgess Hill, UK Death, Obituary

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Dave Tyrrell, who died following a long and courageous battle with a brain tumour. Losing Dave in his early forties feels like a profound theft of time for all who knew and loved him. Yet, as any fly-half would say, it’s never about how long you hold the ball—it’s about what you do with it. Dave made every moment count.

On the pitch, Dave was a metronomic fly-half—a thoughtful, composed player who seemed always one step ahead. Calm under pressure, he had an instinctive understanding of the game, knowing exactly when to pass, step, or run. Those who played alongside him took comfort in his presence; with Dave at number 10, you always felt in safe hands.

But Dave’s influence extended far beyond his playing days. After his wife Lucy helped relaunch the women’s rugby section alongside Louise Skelhorn, Dave found a new purpose in coaching the Black Widows. There, he made a lasting impact—not just by teaching the fundamentals of the game, but by building belief in others. He had a rare gift for seeing potential where others saw doubt, and his patient, encouraging approach helped many players grow in both confidence and ability.

Above all, Dave was devoted to his family. He leaves behind his wife Lucy and daughter Beth, who were the center of his world and his greatest pride.

Dave’s funeral will take place at Edward the Confessor Church in Burgess Hill on Tuesday 14th April at 1pm. Burgess Hill RFC players are warmly invited to attend, wearing a club top or something bright and cheerful to celebrate his life. A wake will follow at The Woolpack pub.

Family flowers only, with donations welcomed for St Peter and St James Hospice, who cared for Dave in his final year.

From everyone at Burgess Hill RFC—rest easy, Dave. Your game may be over, but you truly played a blinder.
